The processed cow slurry (Bio-HS) was found to resemble natural HS from soil (Beech- HS, Spruce-HS) in composition and in extraction performance of two heavy metal polluted soils comprising a strongly polluted, calcareous urban soil (CRC soil) and a moderately\npolluted agricultural soil (CUP soil). After 10 extractions, 8–39% of the total contents of Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb in the soils were extracted with HS solutions containing 25 mM DOC. Extraction of Cu from the CRC soil increased from 29% to 41% when the concentration was increased from 25mMto 100mMDOC. In the comparison of Bio-HS and EDTA, 41% of total Cu was extracted by Bio-HS but EDTA extracted 67% from the CRC soil, and the extraction with EDTA was faster, i.e. EDTA is a more efficient heavy metal extractant than HS. However, sequential extraction showed that both extractants removed exchangeable, carbonate-bound and oxide-bound Cu as well as part of the residual Cu, i.e. they can clean the polluted soil to a level, where the solubility of the remaining heavy metals may be considered harmless for the environment. Therefore soluble HS prepared from processing of organic waste products is suggested as cleaning agent of polluted soils instead of the environmentally problematic EDTA. |

HS renser jorden for olie (PAH'er). Amendment of the highest dose of ESHA to pyrene contaminated soil was observed\nto have two major functions. The first was to mitigate CO2 production significantly by reducing 14 CO2 from 14C pyrene mineralization. The second was to significantly increase stable bound 14C formation, which may serve as a remediation end point. Overall, this study demonstrated a practical approach for decontamination of PAH contaminated soil. This approach may be applicable to other organic contaminated environments where active bioremediation is taking place. |

Humic substances have important roles in soil fertility, and are considered to have primal relevance for the stabilization of soil aggregates. They can be divided into three components according to their solubility: humic acids, fulvic acids and humin. Humic acids are the most explored group of humic substances. Beyond their relevance for life these substances have industrial applications in the development of absorbents to be used at the sources of metal-poisoning. Being natural substances, their purification process is cheaper than the synthesis of any other sorbent and, moreover, due to their high operability, they absorb more than the absorbents used to date, such as active charcoals or clays. The specific properties of humic acid products enable their application in industry, agriculture, environmental and biomedicine. |
